流星群运行到地球附近，其中，有些闯入大气圈，并同大气摩擦燃烧而产生光迹，划过长空的现象，称为流星现象。质量大的流星体，在地球大气圈中未被烧尽而降落到地面的整块或残片，称为陨星。根据其组成成分，陨星又可分为石质陨星和陨铁。石质陨星的主要成分是镁、硅和铁的氧化物，又称为陨石（也叫石陨星）；铁质陨星的主要组成元素是铁（占90—95％），还有少量镍、钴、铜、硫、磷等元素，所以又称陨铁。
